If you haven’t heard of the movie, here’s a quick plot:
Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) directs this wild, wild version of the stories of Baron Munchausen, pushing the limits of 1989 special effects technology to bring us such sights as a horse divided in half and running around in two parts, and a giant Robin Williams with his head flying off his shoulders. Basically, this is a treat for Gilliam fans, as the sustaining idea of the film runs out of steam, and manic energy alone keeps the momentum going. Casual viewers might find it tedious after awhile. There are nice parts for fellow Python Eric Idle, as well as Sting, Alison Steadman, and Uma Thurman as a dazzlingly beautiful Venus on a half-shell. Gilliam had greater artistic and commercial success with Brazil, The Fisher King, and 12 Monkeys. –Tom Keogh

It seems strange to even attempt a silent version of a Shakespeare play, but they frequntly were made throughout the 1910s. This filming of King Lear had the advantage of starring Frederick Warde, who had played King Lear many times on stage. Warde also made an effort to act for the camera, and give some meaning to his gesticulations. This cinematic classic from 1916 has been lovingly restored and features an all-new soundtrack.

The television movie Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society (2006) continus the adventures of the cast of Stand Alone Complex, the TV series based on Mamoru Oshii’s watershed feature. It’s been two years since Major Kusanagi left Public Security Section 9 and struck out on her own. Batou pursus only investigations that interest him. Togusa is in charge of the Section, largely by default. All three characters, plus Chief Aramaki and the Tachikoma robots, join in the investigation of a string of suicides by agents of a foreign general. The trail leads them to a terrorist plot involving micro-machines created to release a deadly virus, and to the master-hacker known as the Puppeteer. The depiction of a corrupt politician using resources earmarked for the care of an aging population for his own ends reflects recent scandals in Japan. But Solid State Society feels derivative. The plot borrows heavily from the “Laughing Man” storyline, and the general lack of inspiration is evident in the failure to resolve the mystery satisfactorily. Zhou Yu’s Train bounces back and forth, not only between these two romances but also in time, to confusing effect.
