Internet Marketing For Beginners
Author: Lindy Manuel
With so many more people conducting business online, internet advertising is a great way to reach a large population, track your success, and update your ads with minimal overhead and relative ease and convenience. Some of the most common ways to advertise is through buying ad space on search engines, doing pay per click advertising, or participating in link exchanges. If you are a beginner, you may be tempted to hire an online marketing company to meet your marketing needs. However, with a little bit of information and preparation, you will be able to use internet marketing to promote your business or service at a much lower cost.
One of the most expensive ways to advertise online is to purchase advertising space from search engines. This means that when people look up a keyword matching your website, your website will be displayed at the very top of the results page as a sponsored site. However, if you are an internet marketing beginner, you might want to see what results you can get from pay per click advertising or using link exchanges.
Pay per click advertising is a method where you purchase ads that will show up on web pages or with search engine results. You are probably familiar with these ads, which usually appear as banners at the top of the page or smaller ads on the side of the page. Normally, the ads include your website’s title, a brief description, and a link to your site. This is one of the most cost effective forms of internet marketing, since you only pay when users click on the link that takes them to your site. The price you will pay per click depends on where your ad is placed. If you want your ad on a very popular search engine, such as Google, you can expect to pay a higher price than if you choose one of the smaller search engines. Some of the smaller search engines claim to offer a better return of investment since the smaller amount of traffic increases the odds that users who click on your link are more likely to use your services. You also want to purchase advertising through a company that will target your ad to users in a specific geographic area. This is especially important if you are a local business that primarily conducts business in a physical location, as opposed to online.
A link exchange is another internet marketing tool that can be very effective. The main advantage is that you are partnering with relevant sites and the increased traffic will help improve your search engine rating. A higher rating means that you will appear higher up on the results page when people type in matching keywords. The one disadvantage of link exchanging is that some visitors to your site might click on your partner’s site before fully exploring yours.

What are search engines? Quite simply put, these are websites that let you find other websites. You may have a fantastic website or might be offering a fantastic product or a service that offers tremendous value to the consumer from the website, but how is the consumer going to know about your website? A search engine plays an important role as the facilitator. Research indicates that as much as 80% of web traffic to a website comes from a search engine. This means that if you are not doing ’search engine marketing’, then you are potentially not reaching out to 80% of your web consumers.
So search engine marketing can be described as marketing a website on the search engines to enhance web visibility. Popular search engines include Google, Yahoo and MSN. While there are countless others, as much as 95% of search engine traffic comes from these 3 places. Google and Yahoo together account for 90% of that.
Search Engine Marketing - Organic Results and PPC
Google, Yahoo and MSN, there are 2 ways in which you can market in all of them. The first is the organic results that appear when you type in a keyword and a result is displayed. In the organic results, rankings matter greatly because most of the visitors do not go beyond page 2 or 3 in a result page. Search engine marketing here involves ’search engine optimization’ (SEO). Its objective is to try and improve the ranks of the website in the search engine - for best results, the website should be ranked in page 1 of the results page when a visitor has typed in a targeted keyword for the business.
But the problem with SEO is that, there are countless websites competing for the same keywords, and the fact that there can be only 10 websites in page 1 means that the results are not guaranteed. Plus, it may take a long time to get results too. Search engines also change their algorithms from time to time and when this happens there is a major change in the ranks. When this happens the business suddenly sees a huge drop in the web traffic and the search engine marketer has to start almost from scratch again.
PPC or Pay Per Click is a way out of this. The biggest advantage in this is that you get results almost instantly. Just open an account, research the keywords, create the advertisements, decide the cost per click, and you are ready to go. The advertisements begin to appear in the paid column and when there is a click, you get traffic to your website. You need to pay the search engine per click, but the amount you pay varies depending on the keywords you have selected and also the position of the advertisement.
