I started watching DBZ when they first aired the dubbed, prick versions on YTV here in Canada. (96, or 97 I gain) I was twisted instantly. Let me assert you, it’s not a superb thing to be addicted to DBZ during 11th grade when all your friends are too cold for cartoons. (Let alone now around ten years later) But what do they know?

…Anyways. Since they first released episodes on VHS, I’ve always been waiting for the complete sets. ”’Frieza”’ was the first saga that I ever saw, and is my personal common. It’s truly a pleasure to recognize them again.

Anyone reading this probably knows the deal with FUNimation’s decisions with the modern three box sets. It’s no different here. The recount is cropped on the top/bottom. You get a itsy-bitsy amount of record on the side, so it’s not all negative. The portray looks big though, and thats what counts. Try watching this on a HDTV using a upscaling DVD player and you’ll catch my point. The colors are lustrous, and the characterize distinct. The last thing you’ll be thinking is “I really miss seeing the tip at the top of his hair.”

You accept all the episode’s uncut, with novel Japanese audio (There’s english dub included though) All 33 episodes for thirty bucks. Thats a mountainous deal. Thanks to FUNimation, we can assume the first 107 episodes uncut, for less then $100 bucks. That is very rare in the anime home video world.

Season 3 of Dragonballz features the whole Frieza Saga. Although I cherish most of the DBZ Sagas, this is my accepted saga out of all the others.

I remember I alway wanted to accumulate this saga but it was 10 tapes or DVD’S and the cost was around $80-$100, and I could not afford that. But thanks to the original DBZ season sets I could secure this for 30 bucks instead.

I’m going to rob this the first day it comes out.

I did not like this film it was boring and not original. Who ever filmed it also filmed it to dark so it is hard to watch. But you may want to watch it for your self.

When American audiences first saw Mario Bava’s 1963 horror trilogy, it wasn’t the same film he had made in Italy. Finding it too terrifying for kids (imagine that!), AIP pictures trimmed it of violence and intensity, rescored it, and renamed it in order to cash in on the success of Black Sunday. New tongu-in-cheek introductions with costar Boris Karloff were added, the segments were rearranged, and one segment was completely rewritten in the dubbing. It was a good film even in its butchered form, but the original Italian version is excellent. The correctly ordered stories begin with “The Telephone,” a gripping, ornate thriller that anticipates Bava’s later “giallo” horror classics such as Blood and Black Lace. (In the American version, lesbian overtones were removed and the escaped criminal killer was turned into a vengeful ghost.) Karloff stars as a demonic, wild-haired patriarch in the eerie “The Wurdulak,” a gorgeous vampire tale shot on misty, menacing sets. The masterpiece of the collection is “The Drop of Water,” a chilling ghost story with shiver inducing imagery: the piercing dead eyes of the restless corpse will haunt you long after the film is over. Bava’s original framing sequnce ends with a playful tribute to the magic of moviemaking and storytelling, a sweet coda to remind us that it’s only a movie.

The print suffers slightly from wear and tear and water damage but the colors are sharp and vivid. It’s a bit disconcerting to hear Karloff dubbed in Italian, but that’s a small price to pay for seeing the film in its original, uncut form. The DVD also features an extensive gallery of production and promotional stills, biographies, and liner notes by Bava historian Tim Lucas. –Sean Axmaker

Rock ‘n roll movies have rarely been more tru to the spirit of the music than these two from the mid-’50s. That’s not to say that Don’t Knock the Rock and Rock Around the Clock, both of which were directed (in black & white) by Fred Sears and released in 1956, are anyone’s idea of classic cinema. On the contrary, this is assembly-line stuff: the stories are flimsy and predictable; the dialogu is often risible, and much of the acting is on a high school drama club level. But these movies are all about the music (featuring multiple performances by Bill Haley and the Comets, Little Richard, the Treniers, the Platters, and others), with a lesser but still heavy emphasis on dancing, and on those levels they are an unexpected but unqualified delight. In Rock Around the Clock, agent Steve Hollis (Johnny Johnston) and his bass playing pal Corny (Henry Slate) quit their big band gigs and hit the road, where they happen upon Haley and his band in a Podunk farming town. Although they don’t quite know what to make of the Comets’ music (”It isn’t boogie, it isn’t jive, it isn’t swing it’s kinda all of ‘em!”), they know a hot prospect when they find one and promise to secure them a legitimate shot at the big time (with the help of Alan Freed, the pioneering Ohio disc jockey, who plays himself, albeit in a different capacity). Complications ensu, including romantic ones, but, well, who really cares? Haley and his band are on fire; they’re lip-syncing, but the recordings of “See You Later Alligator,” the title tune (which had made its debut a year earlier in Blackboard Jungle), and others are filled with snap and crackle, the musicians are great (especially jazz-influnced guitarist Franny Beecher), the stage show is a riot, and the dancing siblings played by Lisa Gaye and Earl Barton are simply amazing.

It’s more of the same in Don’t Knock the Rock, in which reluctant star Arnie Haines (Alan Dale, a crooner who’s not entirely convincing as a rocker), weary of life on the road, packs it in and heads home to sleepy Mellondale, wherever that is. The kids love him, but the adults, led by the odious old mayor, ban his “outrageous, depraved” music; Arnie then sets out to show them that “rock ‘n’ roll is a safe and sane dance for all young people.” Once again, the plot is about as subtle as a Slayer concert, but Haley, Little Richard, and especially the hip and hilarious vocal trio the Treniers more than make up for that, as do several dynamic, beautifully choreographed dance numbers. The two-disc set includes no bonus features. –Sam Graham

Showdown in Little Tokyo is a 1991 martial arts action-comedy that, in pitting Dolph Lundgren and Brandon Lee as L.A. cops against Japanese drug dealers, plays like a B-movie Tango and Cash or Lethal Weapon 2 (both released just two years before). Between career highs in Rocky IV (1985) and Universal Soldier (1992), Lundgren looked as if he might make it big at the box office, and clearly wanting to be the new Schwarzenegger he is here directed by Mark L Lester, who had earlier helmed Ah-nold’s Commando (1985). In the event both actor and director headed for straight-to-video territory, while Lee (Bruce’s son) went on to The Crow. The 75-minute running time suggests the studio lost confidence and seriously cut the movie though, as the space between the action is filled with nothing but cringe-inducing dialogu, thriller cliches, and Lundgren “romancing” Tia Carrere, it still makes sense. Basing its title on John Carpenter’s 1986 fantasy-comedy Big Trouble in Little China and anticipating Rush Hour (1998), Showdown in Little Tokyo alternates between crude tongu-in-cheek moments and action so ludicrous it’s unintentionally hilarious . A camp disaster that simply defies belief, this is so-bad-it’s-good entertainment. –Gary S. Dalkin
